IKEA Catalog anno 1965
July 24, 2009
My parents like to keep the annual IKEA catalogs – it says it is the most printed book (edit: printed publication) after the bible. Yesterday my mum showed me this…. the IKEA catalog from the year 1965.
It is not in the best shape and the front cover is missing, but still an extraordinarie experience to look through.
“Furnish 2 rooms, kitchen and hall for less than 3300 crowns” it says here on the ad below.
Like something? You could try if this order form still works….

Åh, jag önskar att de skulle börja producera vissa av de möblerna igen. Fåtöljen Hugo och de vita djupa pinnstolarna är fantastiska.
Also ins dritte Bild von oben würde ich sofort einziehen!
viele Grüße, Lucy
Thank you so much for showing the pictures. I really enjoyed looking at the furniture styles. How lucky that she saved the catalogs.
amazing. It has not changed in 44 years.
Smart design never gets “old”. Great to see only small changes in the design.
thats awesome. most of that looks like something you’d still find there today!
with one small difference, the quality of product was surely better in 1965 ;>
now, that’s not to say the quality now is bad, just that they use more engineered wood products today and the plastics are obviously more advanced now.
It doesn’t look like much has changed ;-)
Hey, I think I still have some of that furniture. I have a little orange chair just like that!
I had NO IDEA Ikea had been around that long. They should resurrect some of those chair designs!
srsly they’re so much better.
There are a few pieces that still look pretty good today!
The furniture doesn’t look very different from what they sell today!
This is a fascinating post! So many of those pieces could be sold today.
I shared it with my readers:

Best,

Thanks for interesting post. :)
What a wonderful post! And again I wish it would have happened to me to be on earth in the 60´s.
Cool furniture – still up to date!
I was on earth during the sixties. In fact, I was a teen-ager during most of the decade playing tenor sax in an R&B band which did tunes by James Brown, Wilson Pickett, Sam and Dave, etc. Until about 1965 or so, most of us went around in black chinos with white sox and black leather shoes, in what would today be considered “dress” shirts. For a while I even put stuff in my hair so I could comb it straight back with a part on one side. Fistfights were a fact of life until you found yourself a place in the local pecking order, but usually no one got seriously hurt. A lot of the furniture was covered with thin vynyl that ripped really easily if you scraped it with something sharp, and the framing wasn’t particularly solid, although there was a lot more real wood in use. There was a lot of social tension with “grown-ups” until the Rock and Roll Revolution really took hold around Woodstock time, and people began to discover drugs; including the grown-ups. Almost nobody wanted to be a Vietnam war hero and join the 50,000 dead, except a few very strange guys from Texas, South Carolina and Alabama. The rest of us just decided to stay loaded until the draft board called, and worked diligently on ridding ourselves of the sexual inhibitions that had been pounded into us since birth. Then suddenly there were STDs, Ronald Reagan, and the realization that we actually had to work for a living, and here we are today. Now the damned Republicans have all the money and don’t have the slightest interest in giving it back!

O
What a great idea your parents had.
I love the 2 white arm chairs around the coffee table, they should bring them back.
I just got back from Sweden and it is one place that I would give up Brooklyn for.
I too keep my Ikea catalogues, did somebody say furniture PORN!!!!! The same principles and designs are echoed today – shows what a strong brand they have. Great blog!
thumbs up for “furniture porn”!
Look at the shag carpets in the kitchen…that’s so funny!
i love ikea
I absolutely love Ikea! I’m still in school and haven’t gotten my own place yet, but for about three years I’ve been subscribing to their catalog, mentally decorating my future apartment.
Amazing! everything looks the same… but different :)
The orange years…
Photo 2 the one to the left has gotten a sort of spacius facelift under the name of Karlstad
Photo 4 you can get a relativly simular cabinet.
photo 6 the dining chairs go look for IKEA STOCKHOLM series.
the london leather sofa go look up Karlstad.
infact much is going around as best I can see from what things are on sale today
and to be honest I’ve been looking over some old catalouges and I would love to be able to get some of the stuff.
I wonder if their present-day furniture still looks like what they had 44 years ago… only if somebody would say so in the comments… [/sarcasm]
Wait, I think I noticed someone saying something like that above, but it’s lost in the torrent of other insights now.
This is fantastic!
Agree, the furniture ‘looks’ good, but most of it is in the landfill now. Ikea furniture does not last. Real Scandinavian furniture is durable by design.
I disagree with the furniture not lasting – I lived in The Netherlands in 2000-2001 and furnished my entire house, down to the dishes, glassware, utensils, pots & pans, bedding, towels, etc., with IKEA. I was able to bring back several pieces to the US – a dining table with 8 chairs, matching buffet with 4 doors and 4 drawers, bookshelves, a large L-shaped sofa, some occasional tables and a glass curio cabinet. I am still using all those pieces and are still like new – I have no plans to get rid of any of it for many years to come. I also have several pieces of “real Scandinavian” furniture, including two large leather sofas, three leather recliners with footstools and several bookcase units. The IKEA furniture looks just as good.
I live in Denver, Colorado, and have been missing IKEA terribly ever since I moved back here! Luckily, they’re planning to build a store here in the next couple of years! IKEA is fantastic and is pretty good quality for the cheapest prices I’ve ever seen anywhere – especially great for young people just starting out. IKEA is fantastic!
One of my ex-girlfriends in the mid-90s used to make an annual pilgrimage from San Francisco to LA to pick up stuff. Now there’s two within about 50 miles. Huh — hard to believe that Denver doesn’t have one by now…?!?!
We bought a dining table, chairs, bedside tables and many childrens furniture items at IKEA when we bought our house seven years ago and it is all still going strong today.
Their furniture is great quality at great prices. That is why they have lasted so long and continue to grow by leaps and bounds.
Dean, if your IKEA furniture is in the landfill, maybe you did not assemble it correctly!
Alltså – hoppas att de börjar producera gamla klassiker – dom är ju riktigt fina
hey look at that….Futura! not VERDANA
Haha, word up!
I had no idea IKEA was that old! Wow!
Amazing stuff. Wish I could go to ikea and buy this style tomorrow.
3300 crowns? I wouldn’t pay more than 2000!!
Nuts.
Really nice!
Can I use one of the pics for my blog? If not, just post a comment and I’ll erase it. (http://jenefeldt.se/2009/08/27/ikea-katalog-fran-1965/)
Yes you can. Thanks for asking.
Thanks for sharing! I think that a lot of furniture look like they do now, for instance the white table+chairs and the sofas.
some things are still modern yet, or…again.
Awesome! It’s made my day!
Zeitloses Design, zumindest was den Katalog angeht: Wenn ich mir die Website so anschaue, und mit dem Katalog von vor 44 Jahren vergleiche, kommt mir vieles vertraut vor. Freue mich schon auf den nächsten Besuch.
Beautiful! I was at Ikea last night and was quite upset that I didn’t have the means to buy some lovely mid-century style occasional tables they had in the As Is department- one looked quite a bit like the coffee table in the last photo. Some things never change!
soooo cool !
I would still love a lot of that stuff… particularly the orange living room lounge chairs and any of the white pieces.
To the landfill comments: A lot of IKEA stuff, today, is only fit for the landfill, but there is plenty in there, if you look carefully, that is nice… It just costs more (like anything else that is well made.) Too bad, that the junk probably sells much more simply because it is cheaper.
Don’t change a winning concept! :)
I bet none of the furniture lasted as long as this charming catalog
coolt:-) …retro rockar fett:-)
Hej Sara. Tack för trevliga bilder. Jag gör som Johan och frågar om lov att få använda en bild i ett blogginlägg. Länkar självklart till ditt inlägg.

Visst far du det. Kul att ni gillar mina bilder :)
I like IKEA too… but this is an illusion, these days everything is retro or vintage, IKEA is playing that card bringing back the style and colors from the 60’s. One major element stricking me is about the sofa’s they really dont look the same.
the design for the couches don’t changed a lot….
Riktigt nice möbler ändå!
tu vs trouver ton bonheur pour décorer ta House
Bises à tous,
Jean.
Not much has changed with their designs then!!
I stumbled on to this part while watching Fight Club as the narrator began his monologue on the Ikea catalog. :P
Amazing!
Just one comment: Ikea catalog is not really a book. It is just a cataloge, and it changes every year.
Otherwise you could consider magazines and newspapers too…
I changed to “printed publication” ;)
Hello Sara!
Really cool! thanks for rescue those pages and share them! I spread them out too, check out http://www.blog.itunube.com
clockwork orange ¡¡¡¡¡
Farcinerande :)
Fast jag tyckte fotona på de möblerade rummen såg ut ungefär som de gör i dagens kataloger, om än lite mer orange, brunt och grönt :)
yo quiero uno de esos para enmarcarlo!!
wow!!
Now the question is… How do you think they imagine the 2009 catalog in 1965?
So cool! I got a friend who has been saving the IKEA-catalogues too.
Really, some of these furnitures are really hot today. I wish they could take at least a few of them into production today!
awesome they could keep using Futura for so many years – very stupid idea they replacing Futura with Verdana, this year – is IKEA leaving being careful about design? this is really dangerous, which can mean IKEA will not survive for longer.
Some of these designs are timeless classics. Thank you for the photos.
What are you going on about. The furniture DOES look old, and most of it is quite tacky – much like what you can get on Ikea nowadays (not to say they don’t have quality products, though, cause they do.)
What I dislike about Ikea is that it’s the ONLY place you can get affordable furniture from, so your choices are very limited. I wish Ikea had more competition…
the black sofa is in the SIMS 2 PETS!! exactly the same
I love it! I´ll post it on my web!
Cool!!!!
Hmm this is great post.
Great, I like it ! :-)
Haha wow, this is so cool. I love Ikea, thanks for the pictures!
Åh, det där orange teakiga vardagsrummet…
